The debut of Speedo’s LZR suit last summer along with numerous other new generation suits led to some insane times in Beijing as well the NCAA season. Having worn a LZR before, I can attest that it is an awesome suit, you dive in and you just feel fast. Thats actually what all of these suits are about, not so much drag reduction, but how they feel on you in the water. With many club teams having deals with suit companies set up so that if a team member gets a certain cut they can get a free suit or reduced price on a suit, we should see some quick times and definitely some broken league records at All Star Relays and All Stars when the senior swimmers will break out their new suits earned during the winter season.
Sweet as these suits may be, they raise an issue for summer leaguers. The question of should little kids be allowed to wear these suits, and does it give an unfair advantage to the swimmers who can afford the LZRs over the ones who can’t? Luckily NVSL follows USS rules, and 12 and unders will not be allowed to wear the new suits this summer. This decision is a good one, not only because it evens the playing field for the younger swimmers, but also because a 9 year old in a LZR would be about as awkward as a Michael Phelps interview.
