Chesterbrook vs. Overlee: Who is the Deadliest Warrior?
by wett'n on Jul.17, 2009, under Teams
The Chesterbrook-Overlee ”duel” meet on Saturday is going to be a clash of the Titans. Saturday will be the best dual meet of the season as the top two teams in the league face off. To break down the meet, NVSL News has used Spike TV’s Deadliest Warrior format.
Chesterbrook: Ninja, a disciplined warrior that uses both agility and strength. When facing their most common enemy, the Samurai, a Ninja must rely on intellect and strength. A Ninja always has countless tricks up their sleeve (putting 13 year old Alston Offutt in the Senior Breast) and knows how to create illusions and diversions that distract the enemy (Chesterbrook Seniors always have an awesome cheering section as well as pre-meet skit). A Ninja also knows what it means to be the underdog in a fight (Joe Viola has coached countless Gonzaga teams to WMPSSDL Championship victories despite being predicted to lose by 30 points or more). As seasoned warriors, Ninjas rely on their plethora of weapons (age group swimmers). Look for Chesterbrook to be both nimble and stealthy.
Overlee: Spartan, another disciplined warrior with a long culture and history of dominance (Overlee has competed in Division 1 since the beginning of the NVSL). Spartans wear their integrity on their shields and rely on their comrades when going into battle (Overlee will need to rely on all their swimmers tomorrow in order to take the triple crown). Spartan weapons are simple, yet effective (see the Overlee “WALL” that 8 & Unders must start from). Spartans are also known for their resilience when in battle (0-5 season in 2003; followed 3 years later by a 5-0 season in 2006). Look for Overlee to rely on its culture of winning and simple strengths tomorrow against Chesterbrook.
The Ninja vs. Spartan match up on Saturday will be intense, with the winner taking home the Division 1 Crown. May the best warrior win.

Alston Offut had one of the best 50 Breast races ive ever seen……..and SHES 13!!!!!
July 19th, 2009 on 5:21 pm
Yes, Ms Offutt’s race was stellar but she was bested by half a second in the 50 breast by another 13 year old, who DID compete in her own age-group, Overlee’s Rachel Robertson. A head to head race between those two might have proven far more interesting. The Chesterbrook Coach chose to put Ms Offutt in the 15-18 girls for some reason instead of allowing us to witness this potentially fantastic match-up!

Haha thank you for that this is rachel robertson i thought it would’ve been amazing for me and alston to swim next to eachother we are really good friends it would’ve been a great race but i will be swimming against her at divisionals this weekend so that will be interesting…i dont know who you are but i hope you get to see it!! can’t wait!

YEAH RACHEL!!!

Yes, because it maximized total points for the team. By swimming Ms. Offut up, Chesterbrook scored 1st and 3rd in the 15-18 breast and 2nd and 3rd in the 13-14 breast, for a total of 10 points. If she had not swum up, Chesterbrook would have taken only 2nd in 15-18, for 3 points, plus either first and third or second and third in 13-14 for 6 or 4 points, for a total of 9 or 7. While the Offut-Robertson matchup would certainly have been interesting, summer swimming is a team sport as well as an individual one, and sometimes the most potentially exciting or challenging individual races have to be sacrificed for the good of the team.

For the sake of one point, wouldn’t it have been more exciting to see the 2 best 13 yr olds go head to head?
July 19th, 2009 on 7:11 pm
Maybe–but this was a meet that Chesterbrook had a shot at winning, even if it didn’t turn out that way. If the team had lost by one point (or two or three–since the point difference would have been 3 if Offutt had lost to Robertson), I don’t think the Chesterbrook kids would have been very happy that they got to see the 2 best 13 year olds go head to head in breaststroke.

Hey, what about that Abigail Ortmayer? I just heard she got 4th place at the Maccabiah Games. Wouldn’t she have won the 15-18 50 breast? Doesn’t she do like a 34+ or something? That’s what the NVSL website says. Had she been there this whole “Alston winning the 15-18 girls 50 breast” would have been a ‘mute point’ (pun intended).

Amazing swimming all the way around — Ortmayer is regularly a 35 second breaststroker and will be back next year so the Alston-Rachel match-up will take place next season and at this year’s divisionals (and for the next five years as they both get better and better). They are two swimmers, but more importantly are even better kids and teammates!
Also hats off to Robertson for pulling a major upset in the 13-14 back — she was seeded a half second behind the CB swimmer and won easily turning an expected 6-3 CB race in to 5-4 Overlee. Also key was Maggie Shipley’s upset in the 8 and under girls free, seeded third, Shipley dropped a ton of time and won the race.

Thank you very much

i would have liked to see some nvsl news people at division championships other than division 1, no matter how close this was. although i understand there probably is not enough resources, Divisions 3 and 5 both had meets that were closer than this meet. Additionally, the two other divison 1 meets posted smaller margins.

Anonymous, they clearly haven’t gotten to your comment yet. These guys delete anything negative. This is a 90% division 1 fan site, they might as well just rename it as such.

our team is in division 1 and I pretty much know what’s going on there but I read this site BECAUSE it covers what is going on around the NVSL-not just our division-great job guys!

Wow, it’s great to see so much back and forth on our site.
Anonymous and Anonymous1, please understand that we would have loved to be at the other division championship meets. The reality is that we simply do not have the staff to enable us to visit multiple meets in the same weekend (keep in mind that there are only two of us). We would like to remind you that we announced earlier in the year (just for this reason) that anyone is welcome to send in videos from any meet in order for us to post. Therefore, if you feel strongly that a meet should be covered, you are welcome to help us cover meets we are not able to attend. Additionally, the comment regarding this being a “90% division 1 fan site” is simply inaccurate. If you refer to the previous 10 articles posted before the Overlee vs. Chesterbrook matchup, none of them are directed at Division 1 content. Furthermore, we have interviews with swimmers from Division 3, Division 8, Division 9, and Division 11 just to name a few. These interviews were obtained by visiting the teams during their dual meets.
Again, we cover as many meets as physically possible. Anyone is welcome to send videos of races that we have missed. Please help us rather than criticize us.

yeah, i got it. don’t get me wrong, you guys do an excellent job with this site, especially with only two of you. I understand it would be difficult, if not impossible to provide coverage like what i was talking about at this stage, and I hope that you continue to grow until that does happen.

and o by the way anonymous division one is the top of the nvsl. I have seen d 1 meets along with d 4, 8 9 10 meets and they are all very competitive, but who wins the NVSL crown is the much more anticipated meet over d 3 or 5. I think it is right for nvslnews to be at the OVL CST meet.
